「なんちゃってツーブロック」

 

 

最近髪型を変えてみた。

工房のスタッフからはあまり評判は良くは無いが、

髪型は「慣れ」だというので、気にしない事にした。

 

ウチの奥さんの前職は理容師なので、

結婚してから今まで床屋に行かずに過ごしてきた。

髪結の亭主と言えば羨ましがられるが、

結婚を機に仕事を辞めてしまったので、

読者が想像しているような状況では無い。

 

定番の髪型は丸坊主だったのだが、

そこは元床屋、

丸坊主と言えども手は抜かず、

業務用のバリカンを使いこなして細部まで刈り込んで頂いた。

 

蛇足だが、

坊主頭の利点は石鹸1個で全身を洗えるという利便性に尽きる。

へアドライヤーも必要としないし、ブラシや整髪料なども無縁だ。

因みに、

ボディーソープで髪まで洗うとちょっとおかしな感じになるのでお勧めできない。

シャンプーで体を洗うといつまでもヌルヌル感が取れないのと同じだ。

 

話を戻そう。

去年、散髪の途中でバリカンが壊れ、

虎刈りの坊主頭になってしまった。

流石に毎回ハサミだけで坊主頭を整えるのは超絶面倒臭いということで、

次からは床屋に行けと諭された。

この一件を切っ掛けに、

Barber Noriko（妻の名前）は閉店を宣言した。

 

私自身、意外にもこの虎刈りの坊主頭が気に入ってしまい、

20年振りに訪れた床屋さんで、

自撮りした写真を店主に見せ、

こんな感じにしてくださいとお願いするようになった。

そんな中、

行くたびに写真を見せるのが面倒だなと思い始めていたら、

店主が私を見るなり「今日も、なんちゃってツーブロックでいいですか？」

と尋ねてきた。

知らぬ間に私の髪型が命名されていたらしい。

聞けば、

明確にツーブロックでは無いし、かといって丸坊主でも無い。

ゆえに、付けた名前が「なんちゃってツーブロック」だったそうだ。

言い得て妙とはこの事か。

名前が決まれば注文も楽になる。

髪型も名前も気に入った。

色気付いた、面倒臭がりの40代後半のオッサンにとってはありがたい話だ。

 

さて、

この「どちらでも無い」で、ふと気付いた事がある。

今年から本格稼働を始めた石巻工房とカリモクのコラボ、

“石巻工房 by Karimoku”も似て非なるものではないかと。

 

誤解を恐れずに言えば、

いや、

大いに誤解して頂きたいのだが、

このコラボレーションは両者の得意、不得意を絶妙に組みあわせ、表現していると言っても良い。

ことの発端、経緯は芦沢と加藤副社長の対談をご覧頂くとして、

周囲への説明不足も相まり、

当初はすんなりとは理解されなかった。

 

大規模かつ生産性と品質を高めて展開している日本最大の家具メーカーが、

貧弱な設備と手作業で生産される非効率な石巻工房の家具をRedesignし生産する。

 

一見すれば意味不明は至極当然。

私も最初は「なにそれ？？」と思ったほどだ。

 

このことは、

互いのファンに対する明白な裏切り行為だと揶揄される事もある。

だが、

すきまオーシャン（※1）的に捉え、マクロな視点で俯瞰すれば、

誰もが思いつかなかった組合せで、

自ずからムーブメントを起こすことができる。

既存のファンを偽らず、新たなファンを増やす良いチャンスになるのではないか。

 

ダメなら違うアプローチでもう一回やってみよう。

面白いと思った事をとりあえずやってきた石巻工房にとっては、

ある意味においてお家芸だ。

これだとかなりふざけた表現になってしまうが、

このコラボレーションを肩肘張らずに楽しんで貰えれば良いと思う。

 

さて、わたしはと言えば、

なんちゃってツーブロックを更に楽しむために、

娘のコンディショナーをコッソリ使ってみたりする今日この頃なのだ。

“Mock Two Block Haircut”

*Editor’s note: The Japanese word “なんちゃって” (nanchatte) is difficult to translate, but the nuance is something akin to “mock”, “imitation”, “joke”, “-ish”, “like”, etc. In essence, something close to the real deal but not quite (and not necessarily a negative nuance). 

 

Recently, I changed my hairstyle.

It hasn’t been a hit with the other staff members,

but it’s just a matter of time for them to get used to it, so I don’t mind.

 

My wife used to be a hairdresser,

so after we got married I stopped visiting the barbershop. 

While being a hairdresser’s husband* might make you envious,

since she decided to quit after we got married,

it’s not the situation you might imagine.

I would usually go in for a quick close-cropped cut,

but since she was a professional hairdresser

even with something as simple as a close-crop,

she would use professional hair clippers and trim with precision.

 

Just as an aside,

The advantage of a close-cropped cut is the convenience of just washing your entire body with one type of soap,

And there’s no need for a hair dryer, brush, or other styling products.

By the way,

I would not recommend using body soap to wash your hair.

It results in the same kind of slimy sensation as using shampoo to wash your body.

 

Anyhow, back to the story.

Last year, the clippers broke in the middle of a haircut,

Leaving me with a partial close-cropped cut.

Because achieving a close-cropped look with only a pair of scissors would truly be a pain,

I was sternly told that from now on, I should go back to the barber shop.

And thus, from this instance,

Barber Noriko (my wife) closed up shop. 

 

To my own surprise, I grew quite fond of that partial close-cropped cut.

And so, heading into the barbershop that I had not visited in 20 years,

I showed the barber a selfie,

and asked if he could cut it like so. 

Over time,

just as I was beginning to think how troublesome it would be to have to show a picture every time I went in for a cut,

the barber looked at me and asked “So, that Mock Two Block style again, right?”

I wasn’t aware that my hairstyle had a name. 

I asked about it, 

and apparently it’s not quite a Two Block*, but not exactly an evenly shaved look,

hence the “Mock Two Block” designation.

A fitting name.

With a name to it, it’s easier to ask for. 

I like both the cut and the name.

For a complicated geezer in his late 40’s like me who finds being stylish at once both desirable and troublesome, I’m grateful [for the simplicity].

Now,

from this seemingly-meaningless story, I noticed something.

The new collaboration coming into full-force this year between Ishinomaki Lab and Karimoku,

“Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku”, is somewhat similar. 

 

At the risk of being misunderstood,

or actually,

I want you to misunderstand. 

It can be said that this collaboration brings together the strengths and weaknesses of two companies in a complementary combination.

When I read an interview of Keiji Ashizawa and Hiroshi Kato (VP of Karimoku) about the collaboration,

it felt like something was missing in the explanation,

and at first I couldn’t quite understand.

 

Japan’s largest wooden furniture maker, reaching out to greater heights with large-scale advancements in productivity and quality,

is out to redesign the products of Ishinomaki Laboratory, a company with shoddy equipment and an inefficient, handiwork-driven mode of production.

 

At first glance I wouldn’t fault you for misinterpreting it that way.

I also thought “What is this??” at first.

 

This collaboration

could be seen as ridiculing or betraying each brand’s fans.

However,

when perceived like an In-Between Ocean (※1) and viewed from a macro perspective,

with such an unexpected union,

you can naturally bring forth a new movement.

Isn’t this a good opportunity to bring new fans into the fold without alienating existing fans?

 

If that approach doesn’t work for you, how about this:

For Ishinomaki Lab, a company that started by simply just going out on a limb and trying out interesting ideas,

this partnership is right up our alley, so to say. 

 

“Karimoku-ish”

“Ishinomaki Laboratory-ish”

 

A bit of a casual, joking way of putting it,

but it might help one to enjoy this collaboration with less stiffness and formality.

 

Now then, as for myself,

in order to further enjoy this Mock Two Block hairstyle,

I’m sneakily trying out my daughter’s conditioner.
